Case Study - Descanso Gardens
Descanso Gardens is a 150-acre public garden with 275,000 visitors per year. In
[2009], Descanso’s board decided to become a role model for water-conservation and
fire-protection. This is an "opportunity to come to grips with the major issues
of the day,” and to demonstrate "a change in human behavior away from mindless
consumption at all costs” said David Brown, the garden’s executive director.
Descanso created a plan to fundamentally reduce its consumption of water. One of
the first steps implemented was installing Cyber-Rain’s XCI controllers in its rose
garden. Descanso chose 6 XCI long range controllers to manage the 133 valves in
the garden, which are all managed by a computer within horticulture operations.
"Cyber-Rain allows us to really fine-tune our watering for our plants, soil,
emitters, temperature and humidity,” said Brian Sullivan, Descanso’s director of
horticulture and garden operations. "We are also providing a showcase to our
visitors that they can use water wisely and still have a beautiful garden.”

Customer Feedback
"We installed 8 Cyber-Rain controllers to irrigate the common areas at our
HOA and saw the water savings immediately. It is important to me to be able to manage
all of my controllers from one computer and Cyber-Rain is clearly the best choice.
Based on performance so far, I expect it will pay for itself in [18] months.
"We installed Cyber-Rain in our school district because it can be controlled
both locally and centrally. And we’ve saved labor by not having our staff constantly
reprogramming the controllers as the weather changes.”
"We tested Cyber-Rain by installing for one section of our common areas and
are now in the midst of expanding. It saves time for our landscape crew and we can
see the difference in our water bills. We are so pleased that we are working with
our water district to host a water conservation seminar for our residents to tell
them about Cyber-Rain and other ways they can save water.”
Residential Case Studies
Case Study - Patton Residence
Rob Patton, a Los Angeles homeowner, needed a way to reduce the amount of time and
money he spent irrigating his landscape. With nine planting zones surrounding his
home and a landscaper maintaining his garden each week, he still found himself spending
too much time struggling with complicated buttons and the dial timing system in
his garage.
In March 2007, Mr. Patton replaced his timer system with Cyber-Rain, a residential
irrigation system that gives homeowners an easy way to save 30-70 percent on their
landscape watering bills. "The system was surprisingly easy to set up,"
he recalls. "It was easy to get up and running, and it didn't upset my computer's
configuration when I installed it."
Now, Mr. Patton says even though his system is in constant use, he doesn't have
to worry about irrigating his landscape because it is working properly. "I
sign up to my computer almost every day to do other work, so I know it gets weather
data so I don't ever have to adjust it. I've been saving about 30 percent off my
water bill since I started using the Cyber-Rain." And he saw a reduction in
his water bill immediately. "My bill went from $300 to $200 a month."

"Cyber-Rain makes it easy to help our planet by conserving water. I no longer
have run-off and I don't have to remember to turn off the controller when it is
raining." Louise, Red Bank NJ "
Not only did my water bills go down, but I also got a rebate from my water municipality
for purchasing Cyber-Rain. It paid for itself in less than a year." Ginger,
La Canada CA

system." Sini, Seattle WA
Landscape Contractors Case Studies
Case Study - Kumra Residence
Brad Littlefield was hired to upgrade the irrigation system at a 6.5 acre estate.
His first priority was updating the old timers. The Santa Clara Valley Water District
offered attractive rebates, so he researched the approved smart controllers.
Cyber-Rain was the clear choice. He wanted to centrally manage all of his controllers
from one PC. "But the key for me was that Cyber-Rain does not charge monthly
or annual fees for weather data,” said Brad. "These fees become very expensive,
particularly when installing multiple controllers. Cyber-Rain had all the bells
and whistles and the price was right.”
Brad installed seven XCI long range controllers to manage the estate’s 73 zones.
"Cyber-Rain’s technical support was very helpful in spec’ing the installation
so that the PC could communicate with all controllers across the large property
and very responsive throughout the entire installation process."
"My experience has been great,” he said. "Cyber-Rain has a great product
and team.”
"The owner is very happy with the Cyber-Rain solution. It will not only save money
in water bills, paying for itself, but also add to the overall property value."
